Manager, Automation Engineering
ABOUT THE JOB:
Tarco is seeking an experienced Automation Engineering Manager to lead and develop a growing team of approximately 25-30 automation professionals supporting industrial projects. Reporting to the Vice President, Engineering & Technical Operations, this individual will oversee the performance, development, and operational effectiveness of the Automation group while providing leadership to four Technical Leads and the broader automation team.
The Automation Engineering Manager will be a key contributor to support Tarco's continued growth. The successful candidate will be responsible for strengthening leadership capability within the team, establishing scalable workflows and operating practices, improving resource planning and utilization, and ensuring the Automation group remains positioned for long-term success. While a strong automation background is important, this is primarily a people and operational leadership role focused on building structure, developing leaders, and supporting exceptional project execution.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical credibility with high emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and a client-focused mindset. They are comfortable leading teams, supporting clients, navigating competing priorities, and creating the alignment and accountability required to support a high-growth organization
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of approximately 25-30 automation professionals.
Coach and support four Technical Leads while helping evolve those positions into true leadership roles within the organization.
Support recruitment, onboarding, succession planning, performance management, and employee development initiatives.
Foster strong engagement and communication across the Automation group.
Operational Leadership & Growth
Develop and implement the organizational structure, workflows, and processes required to support a rapidly growing automation team.
Improve consistency, efficiency, and quality across project delivery activities.
Monitor departmental performance and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Establish scalable operating practices that support long-term growth.
Support budget planning, forecasting, operational reporting, and departmental performance metrics.
Resource Planning & Project Delivery
Oversee resource allocation, capacity planning, and utilization across the Automation group.
Partner closely with Project Managers to ensure projects are appropriately staffed and supported.
Participate in workforce planning discussions to anticipate future resource requirements.
Support project execution by removing barriers, resolving conflicts, and ensuring teams have the resources required for success.
Drive accountability for project performance, quality, and client satisfaction.
Client Relationships & Business Development
Participate in client meetings, project reviews, proposal development, and business development initiatives.
Support the resolution of complex client issues and project escalations.
Build trusted relationships that strengthen client confidence and contribute to future growth opportunities.
Support strategic pursuits and major project opportunities as required.
Technical Leadership
Maintain and strengthen technical standards, engineering processes, and quality programs across the Automation group.
Provide technical guidance and support to project teams and Technical Leads.
Contribute technical expertise during project planning, proposal development, and execution activities.
Remain sufficiently connected to the technical work to support teams when required while maintaining focus on leadership and operational responsibilities.
YOU HAVE:
Education & Certifications
Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.) preferred, along with an Engineering degree, technical diploma, or equivalent.
Experience
10+ years of progressive experience within industrial automation, controls, or related engineering environments.
Demonstrated experience leading technical teams within a consulting, EPCM, engineering services, systems integration, or industrial project environment.
Experience managing large teams from junior to senior level automation specialists/engineers.
Proven success supporting organizational growth and scaling technical teams.
Strong client-facing experience with the ability to build credibility and trusted relationships.
Technical Background
Strong understanding of industrial automation systems including PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, RTU, and commissioning environments.
Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to project teams.
Experience supporting industrial projects throughout engineering, implementation, commissioning, and startup phases.
Familiarity with major automation platforms such as Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider, GE, Modicon, Honeywell, or similar systems.
