About the job:

The Technical Lead – Automation SME supports the Discipline Lead – Automation in providing leadership and direction within the Automation Department, ensuring technical excellence and client satisfaction in engineering services. This role involves day-to-day resource planning and the creation and maintenance of team-specific standards, quality assurance, and strategic initiatives to enhance client relationships and drive productivity and brand reputation.

The Technical Lead – Automation SME aligns strategies with organizational goals and collaborates with cross-functional teams throughout the project lifecycle, maintaining a holistic focus on quality, safety, productivity, and sustainability. As an Automation Engineer and SME, the key responsibilities include determining electrical panel requirements, programming PLCs, integrating safety devices and automation components, and troubleshooting existing equipment to identify process improvements.

The ideal candidate will excel in programming PLCs, design fault-tolerant systems, and engage hands-on with tools and equipment as needed. This customer-facing position will involve interaction with clients and subcontractors and requires some travel to project sites.

What you’ll do:

  • Hands-on experience in PLC programming, troubleshooting, and CAD design.
  • Proficient with DCS, PLC, HMI, RTU, SCADA systems, and familiar with ladder logic and structured text.
  • Knowledge of low to medium voltage controls (relays, safety circuits).
  • Strong project management, communication, and teamwork skills, with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA) and advanced proficiency in industrial equipment safety programming (e.g., Safety PLCs like Allen Bradley & Siemens).
  • Proficient in major PLC languages (add languages here)
  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting, qualification, integration, and debugging.
  • Familiar with ISO13485 or similar quality-regulated systems, data analysis, statistics, SPC, and quality improvement methodologies.
  • High proficiency in Rockwell Automation’s Studio 5000 Logix Designer and industrial Ethernet networks, as well as knowledge of PID loop controllers.
  • Advanced understanding of HMI/SCADA technologies (AVEVA/FactoryTalk View SE/Ignition).
  • Experience mentoring and managing team workloads.
  • Experience with Field Bus Networks (Ethernet IP, ProfiNet, Safety-Rated Field Bus Networks, etc.)

  • The position requires an ability to travel to various job sites, necessitating upwards of 10% of your time spent away from the office. This travel may involve visiting different locations for project meetings, site assessments, or on-site commissioning with team members and clients, highlighting the need for flexibility and adaptability in managing work responsibilities across diverse settings.
